11 MUST-HAVE BLACK-OWNED CANDLES, ONE FOR EVERY AUTUMN MOOD

Every fall, my favorite outdoor activity is going back inside, snuggling under a blanket, and keeping a candle on standby. Preferably something a little moody, deeply cozy, and strong enough to make me briefly forget whatever the temperature—or the world—is doing. Tis the season.

And because “fall” means something different to everybody, I rounded up Black-owned candles for every version of the season: the gourmand girlies, the pumpkin-spice skeptics, the literary romantics, the people whose nervous systems have simply had enough, and everyone in between. Consider this your very opinionated guide to finding your fall flame.

for the fall leaves frolic-er

Fall isn’t just an aesthetic anymore. It’s a lifestyle. And Autumn Ambience goes all in with nutmeg, ginger, maple, vanilla, and cream—the olfactory equivalent of a chunky sweater, a hot drink, and absolutely nowhere you need to be. Sweet, spicy, deeply cozy, and exactly what you want burning once 5 p.m. starts feeling suspiciously like midnight.

For the one whose cozy has a dress code.

Not every fall candle needs to smell like something you can order at Starbucks. SE23 goes darker with oak, tobacco, and sandalwood—a warm, woodsy blend that feels sophisticated without losing the cozy. Think polished boots, a good coat, and the kind of November mood that makes you want to have your life slightly more together than you actually do.

For the one who takes cuffing season literally.

There’s something about cooler weather that suddenly has everybody remembering they like companionship. Cuffing Season smells accordingly: juicy raspberry and jasmine softened by amber, musk, cedarwood, and just enough cardamom to warm things up. It’s romantic without smelling like a Valentine’s Day aisle. And frankly, if the candle is the only thing getting cuffed this year, at least your place smells incredible.

For the vanilla girl who wants a little edge.

Vanilla candles have a tendency to go full cupcake very quickly. This one behaves itself. Marie Hunter pairs the sweetness with spicy bourbon and a hit of mandarin, giving you something warm and comforting without making your living room smell like a bakery. Basically, vanilla grew up, got a good coat, and developed taste.

For the literary romantic.

If your ideal fall afternoon involves a book you’ve been meaning to finish and an unreasonable amount of atmosphere, meet Langston. Inspired by Langston Hughes, it layers nutmeg, clove, and leather over jasmine, vanilla, sandalwood, and amber for something warm, smoky, and just a little seductive. Basically, the candle equivalent of owning a very good reading chair.

For the one who likes their peace and quiet luxurious.

Queen Idia is for anyone whose version of cozy skews less pumpkin spice, more expensive wellness retreat. Geranium and frankincense bring the earthiness, while lavender and hibiscus keep things from getting too heavy. Grounding, herbal, a little mysterious—and very good at making an ordinary Tuesday feel like you have rituals.

For the anti-pumpkin-spice.

Some people want cinnamon and vanilla the second the temperature drops. Others would rather die. Casablanca is for the latter: green fig leaf, ripe fig, powdery orris, and white cedar come together in a scent that’s earthy, lush, and decidedly not trying to smell like dessert. Proof that a candle can feel warm and autumnal without a single baked good entering the chat.

For the one whose nervous system has had enough.

Consider this your scented out-of-office message. Chamomile, frankincense, myrrh, vetiver, cedarwood, and tonka make REST warm, woody, and genuinely calming without veering into spa-lobby territory. Light accordingly after a day of emails, group chats, breaking news, and whatever fresh nonsense the universe has decided to put on your plate.

For the one who thinks dessert is a food group.

Cinnamon, cardamom, orange peel, black tea, and vanilla come together in a scent that is dangerously close to convincing you something delicious is happening in the kitchen. It’s sweet, spicy, and unapologetically gourmand—the kind of candle you buy because you want your whole house to smell like somebody’s been baking, without actually having to turn on the oven.

For the one who actually likes going outside in fall.

Some fall candles smell like dessert. Autumn Ease smells like the reason people willingly put on a jacket and leave the house. Bergamot and orange brighten things up, while fresh hay, cardamom, cedar embers, patchouli, and musk bring in that crisp, slightly smoky thing that makes a walk suddenly feel worth taking. Basically, fall without the frosting.

For the commitment-phobe.

Why pick one fall scent when your mood changes every 45 minutes? Laguna gives you six minis to rotate through, from Black Pumpkin & Mystic Leaves and Autumn Clove & Smoked Vanilla to pine, spruce, balsam, and spiced orange. Burn whatever version of the season you’re feeling that day and reserve the right to change your mind tomorrow.

Light one, get cozy, and let the season do what it came to do. Just don’t blame me when you suddenly need one for every room.
